Honours & Awards

Recognition - Wendy Canessa wendycan@telus.net

Do you know somebody is Scouting who you think may have contributed "above and beyond”? Filling in the suggestion form and mailing it to Wendy may result in their achievements being formally recognized with an appropriate award.

There are Scouters who have demonstrated Outstanding Service to Scouting and are deserving of recognition. This questionnaire is designed to help you compile information about these Scouters. Speak to those who know them: Section leaders, Group Committee members, Service Scouters, etc. Anyone who has worked with a candidate should be contacted using this questionnaire. Also, a spouse may disclose information about a candidate not shared with other section leaders. When preparing an Honours & Awards application, some typical questions to ask are:

  • What was done plus when and how?
  • Who else was involved and what was the result?
  • Is there a legacy and how did the youth and Scouting benefit?

This questionnaire will assist in the research and preparation of an Honours and Awards application for Scouter Recognition and Appreciation. Every item may not and need not apply to each candidate. Please elaborate, as Yes/No responses are not sufficient.

I Role In Scouting :

1 ) How does the candidate get involved in scouting activities in their section? What has been done to help other sections within the group? (Participant, organizer, assistant organizer, founder, camp chief, parade marshal, chairperson, etc.)

2) Describe the program they offer that attracts new youth and leaders and retains existing members. Give examples of growth or retention of youth numbers as a result of this program.

3) How has the person used or introduced innovative, creative ideas or activities?

4) What degree of involvement has this candidate shown? Cite examples of their giving up evenings and weekends, sacrificing personal holidays (Attending weeklong events or training sessions, composite Cub Camp, Jamborees, etc.) or donating their own finances, personal belongings, property, etc. for Scouting?

 5) How do they support other groups? Describe joint meetings and assisting in leadership roles.

Reminder: Please elaborate. Yes/No responses are not sufficient.

II Participation Ouside Designated Role:

1) How does the Scouter get involved in activities outside their own group or district? What is their contribution? (Participant, organizer, assistant organizer, chairperson, etc.) Consider activities such as a Beaveree, Cuboree, Jamboree, fundraisers, dances, etc.

2)      Identify if they carry a multi-role in scouting. Describe each role and explain how it exemplifies outstanding service.

3)      What have they done that goes beyond the responsibility of their appointed position?

4)      How do they get others involved in section, group, committees, special events etc.? How do they network and share information with other Scouters?

5)      How do they encourage youth involvement in council or national events?

6)      What and how many Provincial, Canadian, World or Other Jamborees have they attended and explain their role and involvement?

III Training:

 1) What training have they taken to improve their personal skills? What have they done to actively encourage others to take training?

 2) Explain the candidate’s involvement in the training component of scouting such as on-the-job training. Identify the training courses they have trained on and what their role was on the training team. When did they complete requirements to be an accredited trainer?

IV Character Traits:

 1) Explain how they demonstrate an ability to attract and motivate others. How are they able to recruit new members?

 2) Describe any adverse condition (personal or otherwise) they have functioned under and how they handled it or rose above it.

 3) Give examples of how they demonstrate a positive attitude and create the same in others.
